Hair.

I'm having a hair dilemma.

I read in Glamour Magazine the other day that I should only be washing my hair 2-3 times a week, TOPS!

I sort of knew this but only 3 times? Come on!

I go to the gym 4 times a week so right there, I'm washing my hair 4 times because I get really sweating and not washing it would just be gross and I would stink. I like to smell good thank you very much.

Also, I have the type of hair that likes to get greasy after one day.
I do not condition my roots or let the condition sit on my head for more than 30 seconds but my hair STILL continues to look limp and blah after not washing a day.

The only time I can get away with skipping washing is if I just had my hair freshly highlighted or I go the pony tail route which I don't mind because I could always wash my bangs and make it look presentable.

I've tried baby powder, and yes, it does work, but not for the entire day.
I've also tried dry shampoo but I forget the brand I used and I didn't see a difference in my hair what.so.ever.

I want to keep my hair healthy and washing, blow-drying and straightening all the time is damaging it so I need a solution.

Here's my question for you ladies:

If you're dealing with this, what are you solutions for not having greasy hair or what do you do to your hair so that you don't have to wash it every day?

Do you use dry shampoo? If so, what kind? Names of brands, please.

If you have perfect hair that's on your side and you only have to wash it 2 to 3 days a week, then I'm pretty much jealous of you but share your tips anyways.

Thanks so much for your help!

I am in the same boat as you. I just go with the baby powder at night and then blow dry my hair in the morning and that seems to help and then use hair spray. It seems to make the oily hair stay at bay a bit.

Screw glamour- I was my hair every day. Otherwise I'd look like a star in the Grease Musical.

I have extremely thick hair, and I only wash it 2-3 times. I had the Peter Coppola Keratin Hair Treatment back in December, which made it super straight, non-frizzy, and cuts down the styling time dramatically. It's really expensive, so that's the only time I had it done. It is supposed to last five months.

When I wash it, I usually leave it in a towel for awhile (like an hour or so), and then blow dry it.

I say screw what they say as well. If you're not going anywhere special don't wash and use dry shampoo. If not---WASH!!! Hair grows; it'll be fine. I use the cheapo $5 dry shampoo from Walgreens in the white spray can. I have to wsah, blow dry and straighten if I want to look decent.. I'm not trying to win an award for healthiest hair, but hey I gotta look legitimate at some points. LOVE YOU!! xoxo

Who cares what Glamour says. Stupids.

Personally, i have thick hair.....Unless I scrunch it curly, I don't wash it but 1-2 times a week.....It never gets greasy. I could go about a week and a half before it gets the first remote sign of grease!

I have a natural wave so I flat iron my hair when it;s straight- I don't wanna wash and dry AND flat iron everyday. THAT would be damaging.

I agree with prettyface! I have such thick hair and I can usually get away with washing it 2-3 times a week! I wash it Sunday night, Wednesday night, and then usually Friday too for the weekend! I like to french braid my bangs and put the rest of it in a messy bun, or i put it in a straight back bun on the crown of my head. Or I wear it straight one day then curly the next! I STOPPED blow drying my hair as much as I could and I have seen a HUGE diff! Thanks for checking out my blog! Your gorgeous lady!

2-3 times a week.

Crack smokers. No way.

Buy product to keep your hair healthy and nice so you can keep washing it.

I agree that it sounds gross to not wash, especially if sweaty from the gym. Try the dry shampoo...I keep reading about it on all the blogs! If you find a good one, share please :)

See, I used to be like you... and wash it everyday, and time after time my stylist would be like "RASHA STOP WASHING IT ALL THE TIME!"

so finally, I went like 3 days without washing it and realized it wasn't bad, so now I go 2-3 days all the time and my hair actually is healthier...

On the third day, it's usually a little dirty and needs a good washing, but other than that, it usually works out to my favor... guess I got kind lucky.

(I dont go to the gym 4 times a week though, so that might be the difference... Tell ME how do you get the motivation, haha!)

I studied hairdressing and it's true that you should do that this way to make your hair doesn't spoil so much. But I have to wash it almost daily too..

Sometimes to wait a day between washing and washing, I pick my hair up or I wear little hats :)

Girl, that's what ponytails are for -ha! I skip hairwashing a few times a week, too - but I have very thick hair. Just do what makes you feel best! Over a weekend give it a try and see what a few dirty days does for your hair once you wash it again. For me, it's always when my hair is the most hair do-able.

I have the same problem. There's an all organic shampoo and conditioner called MOP that I LOVE! It works so well!

I'm an "every other day" washer. Sometimes I go 3 days, but it gets a bit too greasy for my taste after that. I might be imagining things but I think that your hair gets used to only being washed a certain # of times per week though - it's much less greasy now (after a few years) than right when I stopped washing every day.

I agree with the ponytails comment too :)

I can go a day or two between, I use BedHead's dry shampoo. Another reason your hair might be so limp could be the products you're using...

I just heard rave reviews about Ulta's dry shampoo. What I usually do after the gym, is dab a little bit of conditioner on a damp towel and rub it in my hair, that way it gets a little wet and the conditioner keeps your hair smelling good without it getting soapy, then I blow dry and flat iron and I'm good to go!

Good luck =)

I generally wash my hair every other day. When it goes greasy quicker than that, or I don't have time to wash it, I rarely tie it back - I think that makes it look greasier. I tend to try and make it curlier by scrunching it and then stick a couple of bits back at the front with hair pins - that seems to disguise the grease a little. I don't really like the sound of dry shampoo, although when i was younger I would use talcum powder as a substitute for it. However, it generally made me look like I had dandruff... :)

We're hair sisters honey, I wash my hair EVERY DAY. I actually let the conditioner sit on my hair as long as possible. It doesn't get very oily because of conditioner it just gets oily from having hair on my head ;) I cannot and will not go over 2-3 days without washing my hair and that is only because A) I'm sick and haven't showered, B) I'm camping and there are no showers or C) I'm just wearing it dirty so that it'll be healthy and revived when I do wash it. I use Sleek by Matrix you should try it I've used it for like 5 years straight and haven't even switched either.

Oh girl, I know how your feel...TRUST ME. My hair is the same exact way. I HAVE to wash it every day (to look presentable, and not like a grease-ball), and even sometimes twice a day, if I shower super early in the morning for work. It SUCKS. Period.

Don't listen to any of those magazines or anything that say wash your hair 2-3 times a week. I honestly think they're talking to the majority of people who have 'normal' or 'dry' hair, and don't look like a drowned rat if they don't wash their hair every day. lol Seriously, that's what I look like after 24 hours of not washing it. It's horrible!

The 2 shampoos that I use, that work for me, are Head & Shoulders for Oily hair (oh yeah, I have dandruff ON TOP of the oilyness...aren't I lucky?! ;) ), and the other is by Kerastase (sp?)...I'm not sure the exact name. It's expensive, but, it really gets my hair super clean...so I use that once or twice a week.

Unfortunately, there really isn't anything that helps my hair actually look GOOD after a day of not washing...it HAS to be in a ponytail, and even then, the sides and top look super greasy. No matter what, if I want to wear it down, it has to be just washed.

I'm sorry this comment has turned into a novel! Haha! Good luck, and if you find anything that does work, please let me know! ;)

wash every other day and wear it up on days you don't wash. youtube search for how to do simple updo styles.

I usually wash my hair 4 times a week. I usually have my hair in a ponytail at work so during the work week it doesn't really matter. During the weekend I usually dry and straighten it on Saturday which stays put through Sunday. I do walk 30 mins. a day but not to the point where I sweat too much.

My hair gets greasy too after a day and I run into the same problems as you. I still wash my hair every other day- but a head band is my best friend some days!

2-3 times per week? Those people are high...my hair would look like an oil slick!

i wash my hair every single day. i have to. otherwise it gets really oily. i also use my chi flat iron every day which i'm sure is really bad for my hair. but to be honest, my hair is really healthy. i've been using tresemme "moisture" shampoo and conditioner for years! i love tresemme! i also use their anti-frizz & hair spray!

i totally have the same problem. My hair is really greasy. Ive decided that since my hair is greasy and not dry that it's not so bad to wash my hair more than 2-3 times a week. =D

wow, 2-3 times a week???? I generally wash mine every other day, occasionally I can get it to go three days but you better believe that third day it's up in a ponytail. I have extremely dark fine hair and there's a lot of it so there is no hiding shine or grease. I've yet to find a good dry shampoo that doesn't either change the color of my hair (temporarily while it's in) or make me look like I have dandruff or a powdered wig.... I think that people with thicker hair can naturally go longer than people with finer hair...

I always wonder the same thing!! Gym + that rule do NOT equal a good result!

There is no way I could go through the next without washing my hair after a work out. And although I try to get through 2 days on days I don't do the gym, it's still oily by the end of the second and I fell like I'm damaging my hair also.

One thing I have been doing is any chance I get to let my hair air dry, I use. I take my showers at night because I wake up so early so I just throw it up in a bun and let it air dry over night, and that gives it more volume.

Good luck, im anxious to read what everyone wrote! I skipped to commenting!

2 to 3 times a week? BULL. I have to wash my hair everyday! If I don't straighten it, I can sometimes squeeze another day out of it. If I throw on a headband. And wear it in a ponytail. HAHA!

I have pretty thick hair so I CAN go a few days without washing it (just this week I washed my hair wednesday night and did not wash it again until saturday evening before going out!)

for days that I go to the gym and don't get a CRUCIAL sweat on I will use PSSSST dry shampoo. It's at Ulta for really cheap...I've used a more expensive brand that totally sucked.

It's a good alternative if you really didn't sweat buckets and you think your hair would be cool with just a little touch up!
